Managed Detection and Response (MDR) is a service in which an external provider supplies both the tooling and the analysts needed to detect, investigate and respond to threats in a customer’s environment. It exists because the scarce resource in cybersecurity is rarely the technology but the round-the-clock people able to act on what it produces. The distinction worth holding on to is the scope of authority: a classic managed security provider forwards alerts, whereas MDR is expected to investigate them and to take agreed containment actions — which is why the response mandate belongs in the contract rather than in the sales deck.
