What is IBM LinuxONE?
IBM LinuxONE is a server based on mainframe architecture, but running only Linux. It’s not a typical “big x86 server” - it’s a completely different architecture (the same as IBM Z mainframe), but instead of old banking systems it runs standard Linux (RHEL, SUSE, Ubuntu).

Standard Linux, so everything that runs on Linux:

- Applications: Java, Node.js, Python, Go
- Monitoring: Prometheus, Grafana, ELK
Note: Architecture is s390x (not x86_64). Most open-source software is available, but check compatibility.
How much does it cost?
LinuxONE is an enterprise-scale investment:

FAQ
Is LinuxONE a mainframe? Yes and no. It’s mainframe architecture (IBM Z), but dedicated exclusively to Linux. You won’t run z/OS or old COBOL applications here.
Will my Linux applications work? Most yes. Architecture is s390x - check if your software has a build for s390x (most open-source has).
Is it more expensive than x86? Per unit yes. But at large scale TCO can be lower (less hardware, power, management).
Can I start small? Rockhopper 4 is a “smaller” model, but still a large investment. This is a solution for large environments.
What about support? IBM has global 24/7 support. For mainframe/LinuxONE it’s the highest level.
Does Kubernetes work? Yes. Red Hat OpenShift is certified for LinuxONE. Vanilla Kubernetes also works.
How is it different from IBM Power? Power is a different architecture (PowerPC), runs AIX, IBM i and Linux. LinuxONE is Z architecture, Linux only.
