The switch as the place where boundaries are drawn

Network segmentation starts at the switch. This is where it is decided whether the reception camera can see the server holding HR data.

• Separating networks. Splitting traffic into separate virtual networks is the cheapest way to limit how freely an attacker moves through the infrastructure after compromising one device.
• The management network. A switch admin panel reachable from the user network is a typical deployment-stage shortcut that stays for years.
• Unused ports. A socket in a meeting room with access to the production network is an entry point for anyone who walks into the building. Disabling unused ports closes that vector.
• Default passwords. Network devices are sometimes the only infrastructure whose credentials were never changed.
