Deployments/StatefulSetsPod specs, replicas, strategy
Persistent VolumesData via CSI snapshots or Kanister
ConfigMapsApplication configuration
SecretsCredentials (encrypted)
ServicesNetwork configuration
IngressExternal access rules
Custom ResourcesOperator-managed components
KubeVirt VMsVM definitions, disks, snapshots
AI/ML WorkloadsKubeflow pipelines, KubeRay clusters

Policy-Driven Automation

Kasten uses Kubernetes-native CRDs to define protection policies:

  • Scheduled Backups - hourly, daily, weekly retention
  • Export Policies - replicate to offsite locations
  • Transform Policies - modify applications during restore
  • Compliance Policies - meet regulatory requirements

Key Use Cases

Disaster Recovery

Kasten enables true DR for Kubernetes applications:

  1. Cross-cluster DR - replicate applications to standby clusters
  2. Cross-cloud DR - protect AWS workloads with Azure backup
  3. Cross-region DR - geographic redundancy within a cloud provider

Application Migration

Move applications between environments:

  • Cloud-to-cloud migration - AWS to Azure, GCP to on-premises
  • Cluster upgrades - migrate to new Kubernetes versions
  • Environment promotion - dev to staging to production

DevOps Workflows

Support development and testing:

  • Environment cloning - create copies for testing
  • Blue-green deployments - backup before deployment
  • Rollback capability - restore previous application versions

Ransomware Protection

Defend against ransomware attacks:

  • Immutable backups - write-once storage targets
  • Air-gapped copies - isolated backup repositories
  • Point-in-time recovery - restore to pre-attack state

What has to be restored in a cluster besides data

Backup in Kubernetes differs from backing up a virtual machine in one decisive way: copying the volumes is not enough to bring an application back. The object definitions, secrets, network configuration and start-up order have to come back as well — and those are spread across the cluster and change with every deployment. A data copy without that context leaves you with a volume and nothing to mount it to.

Planning for recoverability of the whole environment rather than of the data alone is what backup services cover.

Frequently asked questions

What is Veeam Kasten and why is it needed for Kubernetes data protection?

Veeam Kasten, formerly known as Kasten K10, is a Kubernetes-native data protection platform designed specifically for the challenges of backing up containerized applications and their associated stateful data. Traditional backup solutions designed for virtual machines do not understand Kubernetes constructs such as Deployments, StatefulSets, ConfigMaps, Secrets, and Persistent Volumes, making them inadequate for cloud-native environments. Kasten provides application-consistent backup, disaster recovery, and migration capabilities that preserve the complete application state including Kubernetes configuration and persistent data.

What new capabilities does Veeam Kasten version 8.5 introduce?

Version 8.5 introduces KubeVirt VM protection, which allows organizations to protect virtual machines running inside Kubernetes clusters alongside containerized applications from the same platform. It also adds improved AI workload backup capabilities supporting the growing number of organizations deploying machine learning pipelines and model storage in Kubernetes environments. These additions make Kasten suitable for organizations consolidating both traditional VM workloads and modern AI infrastructure on Kubernetes platforms.

How does Veeam Kasten handle disaster recovery for Kubernetes applications?

Kasten provides application-centric disaster recovery by capturing complete snapshots of application configurations, Kubernetes manifests, and persistent volume data and replicating them to secondary storage locations or alternative Kubernetes clusters. Recovery operations restore the complete application state including all Kubernetes resources rather than just raw data volumes, enabling faster and more reliable recovery compared to manual reconstruction. Kasten supports recovery to different Kubernetes versions and distributions, which is important for migrating workloads between clusters or cloud providers.

What storage and cloud environments does Veeam Kasten support for backup storage?

Kasten supports a broad range of backup storage targets including major public cloud object storage such as AWS S3, Azure Blob Storage, and Google Cloud Storage, as well as on-premises S3-compatible storage including Object First OOTBI and other NAS solutions. This flexibility allows organizations to implement cost-effective backup storage strategies that match their data retention and recovery time requirements. Immutable backup storage options provide ransomware protection by preventing backup data from being encrypted or deleted during an attack on the organization's primary infrastructure.
