The network as a security control layer

Centralised network management solves an operational problem, but it also delivers something security teams usually lack: a complete list of what is actually connected. It is hard to protect devices nobody knows about.

• Visibility and inventory. An unknown device on the production network — a personal laptop, a printer, an OT controller — is a classic entry point. Finding it is a precondition for any form of control.
• Segmentation and access control. Separating guest, employee, IoT and industrial traffic limits how freely an attacker can move after compromising one device. A flat network turns a single incident into an organization-wide one.
• Rogue access points. A planted access point remains one of the simplest ways to intercept traffic. Rogue AP detection belongs in continuous monitoring, not in a periodic review.
• Configuration as attack surface. Cloud-based management means compromising the network administrator account affects the whole topology. Multi-factor authentication and role separation are a requirement here, not a good practice.
• Telemetry into the SOC. SIEM integrations only pay off once somebody analyses those events continuously.

Does Aruba Central require local infrastructure? Not in SaaS version. For on-premises, a server meeting HPE requirements is needed.

How many devices can be managed? No practical limits. Scales automatically with device count.

How does licensing work? Subscription per device. Foundation (basic) or Advanced (full AIOps).

Does Central replace AirWave? Yes. Central is the cloud-native successor to AirWave. HPE recommends migration.

How does Zero Touch Provisioning work? Device automatically connects to Central after power-on and downloads configuration.

Can I manage devices without internet? Devices work offline, but management requires Central connectivity.

How does ITSM integration work? REST API and native integrations with ServiceNow, Splunk, and other platforms.

Does Central support multi-tenancy? Yes. MSPs can manage multiple clients from single instance.
