Why Fabric Connect?

Traditional networks require VLAN config on every switch. Spanning Tree blocks redundant paths. Segmentation is a manual process prone to errors. Network changes require touching every device.

Fabric Connect is software-defined networking based on IEEE 802.1aq (SPB). Automatic segmentation - VLANs defined centrally, propagated automatically. All paths active - no Spanning Tree blocking. Zero config per switch for new services.

FAQ

What is SPB? Shortest Path Bridging (IEEE 802.1aq). Standard replacing Spanning Tree. All paths active, loop-free.

How is it different from VXLAN? SPB is IEEE standard, simpler in operation. VXLAN requires overlay management. Fabric Connect = SPB underlay.

Can I have thousands of VLANs? Yes. I-SID scales to 16 million. Practically unlimited segmentation.

Which switches support Fabric Connect? 5000 and 7000 series. 4000 series as edge with Fabric Attach.

What is Fabric Attach? Protocol for edge devices (AP, switches) to automatically join fabric and receive proper VLAN.

How fast is failover? Sub-second. IS-IS convergence much faster than STP (30-50 sec).

Does Fabric Connect require ExtremeCloud IQ? Not required, but recommended. ExtremeCloud IQ provides visibility and fabric management.

How to migrate from traditional network? Gradual migration. Fabric Connect can coexist with legacy. Phased approach.

Does it support L3 routing? Yes. L2 and L3 services. IP shortcuts for optimal routing in fabric.
