What is Lenovo ThinkSystem?
Lenovo ThinkSystem is physical servers - machines for server rooms where you run Windows Server, Linux, databases. It’s a competitor to HPE ProLiant and Dell PowerEdge.
Two types:
- SR (Server Rack) - flat, mounted in 19” rack, occupying 1U, 2U or 4U height
- ST (Server Tower) - towers, placed on the floor, like a large desktop computer
Current generation: V3 - latest Intel Xeon 4/5 generation or AMD EPYC Genoa processors, DDR5 memory, NVMe drives.

Example: A company has 5 ThinkSystem SR650 V3 servers with a hypervisor. They run 200 virtual machines - domain controllers, Exchange, SQL, application servers.
Which models to choose?
| Model | Form | Processors | Max RAM | Typical use case |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SR250 V3 | 1U rack | 1x Xeon E | 128 GB | Small branch, edge |
| SR630 V3 | 1U rack | 2x Xeon/EPYC | 4 TB | Web servers, compute |
| SR650 V3 | 2U rack | 2x Xeon/EPYC | 8 TB | Universal - most popular |
| SR850 V3 | 2U rack | 4x Xeon | 16 TB | SAP HANA, large databases |
| ST650 V3 | Tower | 2x Xeon/EPYC | 8 TB | Company without server room |
SR650 V3 - Lenovo’s “gold standard”. 2U, 2 processors, lots of RAM, lots of drives. Fits 80% of use cases.
XClarity - server management
Lenovo XClarity is a platform for managing server fleets:

- Turn server on/off via web
- Virtual media (ISO mount)
- Temperature, fan monitoring
XClarity Administrator
Central console
- Manage hundreds of servers
- Automatic firmware updates
- Configuration patterns
- Ansible integration
ThinkShield - security
Lenovo ThinkShield is a set of hardware and firmware security features:
- Root of Trust - firmware verification at every boot
- Self-healing BIOS - automatic recovery when modifications detected
- Secure Boot - only signed code can run
- TPM 2.0 - hardware cryptographic module
- Encrypted drives - SED drive encryption
ThinkSystem vs competition
| Feature | Lenovo ThinkSystem | HPE ProLiant | Dell PowerEdge |
|---|---|---|---|
| Management | XClarity | iLO | iDRAC |
| Security | ThinkShield | Silicon Root of Trust | Secured Component |
| 4-socket | SR850 V3 | DL560 Gen11 | R960 |
| AI/GPU | SR675 V3 (8x GPU) | ProLiant DL380a | XE9680 |
| Price | Competitive | Premium | Mid-range |
Lenovo has advantage in:
- Price/performance - often cheaper than HPE
- XClarity Administrator free for small fleets
- Good support for Nutanix (ThinkAgile HX)
For whom?
ThinkSystem MAKES sense when:
- • Looking for good price with high quality
- • Planning ThinkAgile (HCI with Nutanix/vSAN)
- • Already have ThinkStation in company (single vendor)
- • Need SAP HANA certification
ThinkSystem DOESN'T make sense when:
- • Already have HPE/Dell fleet - stick to one vendor
- • Require HPE InfoSight (have HPE storage)
- • Need Dell APEX as-a-service
Specifications (SR650 V3 - most popular)

FAQ
What’s the difference between SR and ST? SR = Server Rack (for 19” rack). ST = Server Tower (tower, stands independently).
Intel or AMD? Intel Xeon - better for SAP, Oracle. AMD EPYC - more cores for lower price, ideal for virtualization.
How does XClarity compare to iLO? Similar features. XClarity Administrator (centralized management) is free for small fleets, iLO Advanced is paid.
Do HPE/Dell drives fit? No. Lenovo drives have their own firmware. You can use drives from other manufacturers, but you lose monitoring.
What warranty? 3 years NBD standard. Can be extended to 5 years with 24/7 and 4h response time.
Does Lenovo have GPU servers for AI? Yes. SR675 V3 accommodates 8x NVIDIA H100/A100 for AI/ML workloads.
What about delivery? Warehouses in Europe. Standard 2-3 weeks, CTO 4-6 weeks.
Does nFlo help with selection? Yes. We analyze your workloads and select optimal ThinkSystem configuration.
