A NAS exposed to the internet is a target, not just a network drive

NAS devices reachable directly from the internet have been the subject of mass ransomware campaigns for years. The mechanism is usually the same: an admin panel exposed externally, outdated firmware, a weak password.

• Do not expose the panel externally. Remote access over VPN instead of port forwarding removes most of the attack surface without losing convenience.
• Firmware updates. This is the most commonly skipped item in small companies, because the device “works”. Mass campaigns target exactly those known, long-patched vulnerabilities.
• Multi-factor authentication and named accounts. A single shared admin account makes it impossible to establish what happened.
• Snapshots resistant to deletion. A snapshot that can be removed with the same account as the data will not survive an attack.
• Separation from the domain. If the NAS stores workstation backups, it should not trust the same credentials as the production environment.
