What is IBM FlashSystem?
IBM FlashSystem are all-flash storage arrays - devices for storing data for servers, similar to HPE Alletra or Dell PowerStore. You connect servers to them via storage network (FC/iSCSI/NVMe-oF), and they store VM data, databases, files.
What makes FlashSystem stand out from competition?
- Cyber Vault - built-in ransomware protection (immutable snapshots)
- FlashCore Modules - IBM’s own flash modules with AI detecting anomalies
- Spectrum Virtualize - one software across all models
- Latency <50μs - one of the lowest in the industry
What is it for?
FlashSystem is storage for critical applications:
- Hyper-V - storing virtual machines
- Databases - Oracle, SQL Server, DB2, SAP HANA
- Kubernetes - persistent volumes with certified CSI driver
- IBM i / AIX - storage for IBM Power systems
Typical scenario: Bank has FlashSystem 7300 for production databases. Cyber Vault creates immutable snapshots every hour. When ransomware attacks - data recovery from clean copy in minutes.
FlashSystem Models
| Model | Format | Max capacity | Latency | IOPS | For whom |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5200 | 1U | 1.2 PB | <50μs | 1.5M | Small/medium companies |
| 7300 | 2U | 2.2 PB | <50μs | 2.5M | Medium enterprise |
| 9500 | 4U | 4.5 PB | <50μs | 4M+ | Largest deployments |
“Effective” capacity = after compression and deduplication. Raw 100 TB data can take ~20 TB physical space (5:1 ratio).
What is Cyber Vault?
Cyber Vault is a set of features protecting against ransomware:
Safeguarded Copy
- Immutable snapshots - copies that cannot be deleted or modified
- Logical air-gap - copies invisible to production systems
- Retention policy - e.g., “keep 30 daily copies, 12 weekly”
- Rapid recovery - restore in minutes, not hours
AI Anomaly Detection (2024)
4th generation FlashCore Modules have built-in AI:
- Monitors I/O patterns at disk level
- Detects unusual behavior - e.g., sudden encryption of many files
- Alert in <1 minute from ransomware detection
- Automatic isolation of infected volumes
Practically: Ransomware starts encrypting files at 2:00 AM. At 2:01 FlashSystem detects anomaly, blocks volume access, sends alert to SOC.
How is it connected?
FlashSystem connects to servers via:
- Fibre Channel (FC) - 16/32 Gb/s - lowest latency
- iSCSI - via Ethernet 10/25/100 GbE - simpler
- NVMe-oF - newest protocol - fastest
Example architecture:
[Server 1] ----\
[Server 2] -----+--[SAN Switch FC]--[FlashSystem 7300]
[Server 3] ----/ |
[Cyber Vault]
(immutable copies)
What is FlashCore Module?
FlashCore Module (FCM) is IBM’s own flash module - not standard NVMe disk:
- Computational storage - compression/deduplication in module, not in controller
- Hardware encryption - AES-256, FIPS 140-3
- AI inference - anomaly detection at disk level
- Endurance - 25 DWPD (full writes daily)
Effect: Compression and deduplication don’t load controller CPU = higher performance.
IBM Spectrum Virtualize
Spectrum Virtualize is software managing all FlashSystem:
- Storage virtualization - multiple arrays as one pool
- Data reduction - compression + deduplication (typically 5:1)
- Tiering - automatic data movement between tiers
- Replication - synchronous, asynchronous, 3-site
- Kubernetes CSI - dynamic provisioning for containers
One software works on FlashSystem 5200, 7300, 9500 - migration between models without changing procedures.

When FlashSystem?
- Need lowest latency
- Ransomware protection is priority
- Already have IBM storage (SVC) - one software
- Use IBM Power (AIX/IBM i)
FAQ
How does FlashSystem differ from HPE Alletra? Similar products. FlashSystem has lower latency (<50μs vs <100μs) and more advanced ransomware protection (AI in disk). Alletra has better integration with HPE ProLiant.
What is SVC? IBM SAN Volume Controller - Spectrum Virtualize software running on separate hardware. Can virtualize other vendors’ storage.
Does Cyber Vault require additional license? Safeguarded Copy is included. Full Cyber Vault (with isolated recovery environment) is option.
Can I start with 5200 and expand to 7300? You can add 7300 and migrate data. This is not upgrade - it’s new array.
How does migration from other storage work? IBM has tools for online migration. Data copied in background without downtime.
Does it integrate with hypervisors? Yes. VAAI, VASA, vVols. certified.
Does it integrate with Kubernetes? Yes. CSI driver certified for OpenShift, Rancher, vanilla K8s.
What is the warranty? 3 years standard, extendable to 5 years. IBM has service in Poland.
How fast is recovery from Cyber Vault? Minutes - data is on same storage. You restore snapshot, not copy from tapes.
Does nFlo help with FlashSystem? Yes. Design, implementations, migrations, Cyber Vault configuration.
